WhatsApp is now available as a desktop app for Windows and OS X, the company announced in a blog post on Tuesday evening. It looks the same as WhatsApp Web, and does exactly what youve come to expect from its browser-based counterpart.


"Like WhatsApp Web, our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device," the company said.
That means you still need to have your phone around to log onto the desktop app. Once youve downloaded the new client, it opens up to show the same screen from web.whatsapp.com. You need to scan the QR code displayed on the screen with your phone before youre let through.


Quite frankly, its bewildering. WhatsApps biggest competitor - Facebook Messenger - owned incidentally by its parent company, has a much better Web interface and even a native Windows 10 app.


For whats it worth, the new app - essentially a Node-Webkit wrapper - comes with a few keyboard shortcuts, and does have low memory consumption. On Windows, you can archive a chat by pressing Ctrl + E, mute it with Ctrl + Shift + M, change the read status of message with Ctrl + Shift + U and delete it with Ctrl + Backspace. Press Ctrl + F and youll be taken directly to the search bar, while Ctrl + N and Ctrl + Shift + N help in starting a new chat or group respectively. On Mac, the shortcuts remain the same except youll need to replace Ctrl with the Command key.


But it does have some quirks. While the Web version of WhatsApp works on any browser across all operating systems, the native app is limited to Windows 8 64-bit and newer, Mac OS X 10.9 and newer. Roughly 45 percent of the desktop world still works on Windows 7, so its anybodys guess what the WhatsApp team was thinking.


The good thing about a native app - if youre on Windows 8.1/ 10 - is that the notifications will now appear in the "Action Centre", the right-hand side panel that integrates all notifications and quick access for certain settings.


But if like most people in the world youre usually juggling multiple messaging services such as Facebook Messenger, Skype, Slack, WhatsApp and the like, youre better off using a messaging tool that combines everything into one app, and works on a more diverse lists of desktop OSes. One such option is Franz.


It would be great if WhatsApp could bring voice calls to its new desktop client, and make it independent of your mobile device. But for now, WhatsApp for desktop offers little for its 1 billion+ users.

Truecaller is a popular app that shows you contact details of unknown numbers calling you. It crowdsources contact details from all its users address books. So even if youve never used the service, your name and number could be on Truecallers database, thanks to someone else whos saved your contact details and allowed the app to access them.

Not everyone knows this, but for some fixed-line phones, Truecaller even lists the address of the landline. This doesnt mean much when telemarketers or spammers call from an office address, but ideally you wouldnt want strangers to know your home address just because you called them from your landline. Of course Truecaller sources this data from public data sources. This is because if someone knows your landline number, they can easily find the registered address via any publicly available phonebook (many telcos have this information public) or even by simply searching for your landline number on Google.






For this reason, you should consider removing your number from Truecallers database. Note that you cant remove your number from the service if you are using the app. Youll have to deactivate your own account to get your number removed. If you were hoping to get just your number removed, while seeing contact details of everyone else who calls, youre out of luck.

Open the app > tap the people icon in the upper left corner > Settings > About > Deactivate account.


iPhone >

Open the app > tap the gear icon in the top right corner > About Truecaller > Scroll down > Deactivate Truecaller.


Windows Mobile >

Open the app and tap the three dots in the bottom right corner > Settings > Help > Deactivate account.

Once you have deactivated your Truecaller account, you can proceed to removing your number from the service. Heres how.

1 Go to the Truecaller unlist page.

2 Enter your phone number with the correct country code. For example: +911140404040 or +919999999999.

3 Tick one of the reasons for unlisting, or if you wish, type your reasons for removal in the Other form.

4 Key in the verification captcha.

5 Click Unlist.


Truecaller claims that it removes these numbers up to 24 hours after receiving an unlist request. This doesnt always mean that your number will stay off the service forever. Wed removed our mobile number around a year ago but it started appearing again on the service a few days ago even though weve never used Truecaller. Your best bet is to keep checking with Truecaller users whether they see your contact details. If they dont, youre good to go. If not, you can always ask them to unlist your number.
